Movie Review - Bareilly Ki Barfi by Suhel Johar

Image
Bareilly Ki Barfi Is A Rom-Com With Less Romance And More Comedy! Bareilly Ki Barfi is a rom-com. A cute little love story with a love triangle twist thrown in. A watchable film if you are a fan of romantic comedies that are placed in the context of a small town with all its unique appeal, charm, and quirks. As a film it clicks all the right boxes. You have the peppy girl whose parents have the usual quirks that you might find in people from this part of the world. There are a couple of boys, each of whom is shown to be good enough to win the girl. Bareilly Ki Barfi starts off with Javed Akhtar's voice. The voiceover introduces all the principle characters in the film and also takes us through the rest of the film. The film is about a Bareilly based vivacious girl Bitti Mishra (Kriti Sanon) and her life. Despite being a girl, her father Narottam Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi) and mother Sushila Mishra (Seema Pahwa) have raised her up as a son. A small town Brahmin girl Bit

Is Jacqueline Fernandes To Blame For The Alia Bhatt-Sidharth Malhotra Break Up? by Suhel Johar

Image
It looks like one of the hottest and most loved couples in Bollywood have called it quits. Yes, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra have parted ways and aren't a couple any more. Although, the two never officially confirmed their relationship, they were often spotted at each other’s house, on dates and arriving together at parties and weddings. Ofcourse, there have been reports in the past about their break-up. While some believed it to be rumours, others vouched for the fact that both Sid and Alia wanted to concentrate on their respective careers and hence, decided to give their relationship a break. Reportedly, Sid and Alia had started maintaining distance during the Dream Team tour which they were part of and would only engage in formal talks. But by the time the tour ended they were back to their normal selves and killed the rumours of their apparent break-up. But unlike previous instances, this time, it seems the damage is permanent and their 'now on, now o

Teen Kabootar Song Uses Natural Sounds, Mouth and Body Percussions by Suhel Johar.

After Kaavaan Kaavaan and Meer-E-Kaarwan , the   makers of Farhan Akhtar's Lucknow Central took to Twitter to release a teaser of the new song Teen Kabootar . Farhan wrote on Twitter while sharing the song. "Teen Kabootar ki guttar gu ho chuki hai ab shuru," The song’s mood is simple, fun, and in Farhan Akhtar’s own words it is full of ‘matargashti’. T een Kabootar is a zestful song rendered by Mohit Chauhan and Divya Kumar. Composed by Arjunna Harjaie and penned by Kumaar, this one’s a happy yet unconventional party song. But the most interesting part of the song is that the composer has not used any musical instrument except for a guitar in the composition of the song, since he created rhythms through body percussion and natural sounds from various equipment found in jails like brooms, bins, pots, pans and combs etc. Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain’s percussionist younger brother Taufiq Qureshi has rendered the percussion sound . Qureshi has reportedly u

Movie Review - Toilet: A Prem Katha by Suhel Johar

Toilet: A Prem Katha Is Like A Good Plot That Goes Haywire   After Jolly LLB 2 Akshay Kumar’s latest film Toilet: A Prem Katha is another social issue based film. Based on Narendra Modi’s Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan the film deals with the portentous problem of sanitation and open defecation in India. Despite 70 years of independence women in rural India have to go to the open fields for defecation. The men can sit somewhere in the open, but women have to wait for the dark of the evening to clean their bowels. The film tries to convey the message that women should respect themselves and express their objection to going out for defecation. Toilet: A Prem Katha marks the return of editor turned director Shree Narayan Singh to film direction after a five year gap. His directorial debut was the forgettable Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai (2012) which had launched Shakti Samanta’s grandson Aditya Samanta as a hero. But the film’s failure had forced Singh to go back to editing films. As an ed

Movie Review - Jab Harry Met Sejal by Suhel Johar

Imtiaz Ali Takes Audience For A Big Boring Ride Shah Rukh Khan’s collaboration with Imtiaz Ali has finally hit the screens after an unnecessary row with the CBFC. The film did benefit with all the extra publicity it got due to the controversy. And you wish that the film was never released. Jab Harry Met Sejal proves that Imtiaz is an overrated director who is either still nursing a hangover of Jab We Met or he feels that it is the best formula for a love story. Post JWM he has just been dishing out the same fare by tweaking the scenario a little bit here. So in essence JHMS is no different from Cocktail , Tamasha and Jab We Met ? Jab Harry Met Sejal features Shah Rukh Khan as Harinder Singh Nehra or Harry, who is a tourist guide while Anushka Sharma plays the role of Sejal, who is a Gujarati girl in the film. The story revolves around Harry and Sejal’s journey across Europe. while her entire family takes off to India. She has apparently told her parents that sh

Movie Review- Raag Desh by Suhel Johar

Image
Noble Intention and A Convincing Story Is Marred By Poor Implementation A patriotic film Raag Desh is Tigmanshu Dhulia’s most celebrated period drama, which is an adaptation of a real life event. It is a non- commercial film produced by Rajya Sabha TV. The poster of Raag Desh suggests it to be a war film, however, it is actually a court martial drama based on the famous Red Fort Trials running simultaneously with politics of Indian National Congress and the inception of religious differences between civilians. Set in the pre independence era between 1942-1945, the three soldiers from INA named Gurubaksh Singh Dhillon, Prem Sahgal and Shah Nawaaz Khan were accused of waging a war against King in that era and were charged with the allegation of murder. The story of Raag Desh is about these three soldiers Maj. Gen. Shah Nawaz Khan (Kunal Kapoor), Lt. Col. Gurbaksh (Amit Sadhu) and Col. Prem Kumar Sahgal (Mohit Marwah) of the Indian Army, who were accused of treason a
