"Jo Aurat Ka Dard Nahi Samjhta... Usey Bhagwan Mard Nahi Samajhta!" by Suhel Johar

Image
"Jo aurat ka dard nahi samjhta... usey bhagwan mard nahi samjhta!".   This is a dialogue from the upcoming film , Phullu which is about a man’s story to help women embrace sanitary napkins, It is film that’s daring to disclose what India keeps hush-hush about even in 2017: Menstruation. The taboo around menstruation in India is so deep that women are still considered ‘impure’ when they have their period. However, India’s patriarchal and sexist systems have never been challenged so much as they are being now – with campaigns like #LahuKaLagaan, #HappyToBleed, #IAmNotDown and #TaxFreeWings storming the internet. At such a time – the trailer of Phullu has piqued a lot of curiosity and will hopefully break open the conversation even further, into our living rooms and schools. It looks like the story of one man fighting to ensure access to sanitary pads for the women in his village, while the elders look open-mouthed and openly disapprove of his ‘immoral antics’. Foodi

Sachin: A Billion Dreams   Is Inspiring, Intriguing And Impressive!   Sachin: A Billion Dreams, made by documentary filmmaker James Erskine, remains one of the most awaited biopic of the year and had made all cricket fans eager for the release. A sports-docudrama, the film has also been dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. The film is based on the life of the legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and revolves around the extraordinary career of the batsman, who retired from international cricket in 2013 and also touches upon his personal life. Making such a film on such a personality is a difficult decision in itself.   So, the director James put Sachin on the chair and tells the story with complete reverence and insight. The Master Blaster himself reveals certain aspects of his life that were never heard of before. The film captures the minutest aspects of Sachin’s life in fantastic detail. The duration of the film is two hours and 19 minutes. The film resumes with the birth of

Movie Review - Half Girlfriend by Suhel Johar

Image
Half Girlfriend   Is Just Another Run Of The Mill Yawn Fest. Director Mohit Suri's film Half Girlfriend is based on Chetan Bhagat's book with the same title. If Chetan Bhagat’s original book was bad its screen adaptations is no better or maybe just worse. The film defies logic and relies heavily upon its six music directors to make the film convincing Half Girlfriend has as many as six music directors. The album has around ten tracks that cover a good chunk of the film’s running length of 135 minutes. The generic sad-love Mithoon ballads can’t drown out the shiny, half-witted and aspirational Bollywood-ness of Bhagat’s writing.   His ideas of Bihar, small-town dreams, privilege, poverty, class divides, sports, elitism, sex, romance, education, separation, relationship dynamics, dysfunctional families, feminism and domestic violence seem to be ripped out of an eighteen-year-old Miss World contestant’s rehearsed speech waxing lyrical about World Peace and

Movie Review – Hindi Medium by Suhel Johar

Image
Hindi Medium Is An Impressive Satirical Take On Our Flawed Education System. Every year good English medium schools or private schools in India witness large queues of anxious parents outside their admissions office, waiting to get application forms and secure seats for their tiny tots. For many parents, after all, passing out from a good school is a ticket to future success. For most parents, a choice of school for their children is driven by perception, peer pressure influence, word of mouth (reference from acquaintances and relatives or other parents). Hindi Medium talks about language imperialism and how it influences an individual’s self confidence, ambitions and life. It is a funny take on India's school admission woes which deserves a watch. The film revolves around an Old Delhi couple,   Raj Batra (Irrfan Khan) is a garment businessman based in Chandni Chowk, who deals with original imitations of Manish Malhotra and Sabyasachi Mujherjee’s creations. Raj is a

Will An Indecisive Sara Ali Khan Accept Salman Khan’s Film As Her Debut Film? by Suhel Johar

Image
Ever since Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh's daughter Sara Ali Khan started making public appearances in 2016 there has been a lot of conjecture about her Bollywood debut film. For a long time there was a buzz that Sara will debut with Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year 2 opposite Tiger Shroff. There were also reports of Zoya Akhtar casting Sara in her next Gully Boy . Incidentally, Yashraj Films’ Thugs Of Hindostan was one project that Sara was very interested in doing but was rejected by its producer Aditya Chopra after an audition. The Hindi remake of The Fault In Our Stars was another possible launch pad for Sara but nothing actually materialised and the guessing game about Sara’s launch film continues. The current buzz doing the rounds since last week is that Salman Khan apparently approached Sara for the film with which he is planning to launch his brother-in-law Aayush Sharma. Reportedly, Sara has heard the script, a love story, and is expected to come on-board so

Zeenat Aman Makes A Comeback With A Grotty Web Series by Suhel Johar

Image
The gorgeous Zeenat Aman came, charmed and conquered the box office relentlessly in the past. One thought she was content doing whatever she was doing but she has proved us wrong because she has just made a comeback and a disappointing one at that. The veteran actor Zeenat Aman, who is 65, has made a comeback to entertain her fans through a web series titled Love, Life & Screw Ups . The first episode of the web series made it to the web world earlier this week on the 15 th on Youtube and the second episode went online two days later on the 17th. Zeenat Aman plays a spinster, Joana, who owns a cafeteria and likes to mingle with the youth while dealing with her own messed-up life. The web series Love, Life & Screw Ups comes across as extremely gross and Zeenat Aman is not in her best element. She looks like a misfit in a sleazy drama. Unnecessarily explicit dialogues, out-of-context foul language, forced "coolness" and a visibly struggling-to-act Zeenat
