Movie Review – Raid – by Suhel Johar

Image
RAID  Impresses And Engages Only In Bits And Parts, Not A Compelling Watch Though! The biopic mania in Bollywood continues with Raid . Of late every other film is either based on a real life character or a true life dramatic event. Raid directed by Raj Kumar Gupta (who has earlier made films like Aamir , No One Killed Jessica , Ghanchakkar ) relies on his firm footing as a man of consequence to pitch itself as a tribute to the IT department's unsung heroes. The story of Raid , a period crime thriller, is inspired from a true event involving a brave and incorruptible Income Tax Officer Sharad Prasad Pandey who raided the house of a businessman Sardar Indra Singh in the year 1981 and seized cash and gold worth Rs 1.6 crore. This raid ran for 18 hours and 45 people in it were constantly sitting just to count the notes. Ajay Devgn plays Amay Patnaik, an income tax officer known for his integrity. He's a stickler for rules and is someone who has been transferred

Jackie Shroff's short film wins cash prize in Los Angeles.

Jackie Shroff's short film SHUNYATA wins cash prize of $1,000 at Best of India Short Film Festival in Los Angeles. The 22-minute fiction film directed by Chintan Sarda was selected to be in top six from amongst thousands of entries and was played at a theatre in Los Angeles for a ticketed event for a week. An industry based jury then adjudged it the best film. The prize includes a cash prize of $1,000. In Shunyata , Jackie is seen as hitman Madhur, who leads a gloomy existence with regrets. He is friendly with a child, who lives on the street and sees him getting into the world of crime. Jackie Shroff's tired body language and inherent street smartness makes him believable as the gangster with a conscience in the short film. One can believe that he is cold-blooded by practice, and that the warmth he had suppressed for so long surfaces only at the sight of the boy. Simultaneously, he looks irredeemable – an unforgivable product embodying the worst of India’s teemi

Trailer: Omerta

Image
OMERTA   Looks At What It Means To Be A Fundamentalist. Director Hansal Mehta, who unveiled the gritty trailer of the film on Wednesday, says his idea behind making an “uncomfortable film” is to make the audience face the truth. The film, starring Rajkummar Rao, is based on British-Pakistani terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh. Omerta takes a look at this complex paradox of a man called Omar Saeed Sheikh. Mehta while launching the trailer confessed that it was a difficult subject to choose and a challenge to make. “However, with an actor like Rajkummar, no challenge seems insurmountable and this was the ideal film to hurtle us out of our comfort zone to make something that is uncomfortable. “But that is the burden of truth – it is uncomfortable and it must be faced.” According to Mehta, Omerta looks at what it means to be a fundamentalist and for someone to pick up a gun with the intent of killing in return for an afterlife in paradise. The National Award winning actor R

Movie Review - Dil Juunglee – by Suhel Johar

Image
Dil Juunglee Is A Romantic Fiasco Aren’t we really done with the boring love stories where the hero and the heroine lived happily ever after? Dil Juunglee is an age-old story, told with a hundred stereotypes, none of which helps it. Revolving around the beaten to death formula, everything about the film is so clichéd and predictable. Koroli aka Koro (Taapsee Pannu), an avid reader of love stories wishes to have one of her own, straight from the novels. She is the sole child of a London based business tycoon, settles in Delhi to fulfill her ‘pursuit of happiness’. Much to her dad’s disappointment, she has no interest in upgrading herself as an entrepreneur and wants to settle down with a man and be a mother to her future kids. She teaches English at the British Council in New Delhi which makes her feel content and satisfied in her own way. Sumit (Saqib Saleem), a typical Lajpat Nagar ‘launda’, wants to make it big as an actor in Bollywood. He works as the star trainer a

Movie Review - Hate Story IV – by Suhel Johar

Image
Hate Story IV Is Unique In Is Sheer Freakishness Hate Story IV is another instalment of the popular Hate Story franchise. The hit formula of this bizarre movie franchise is to serves its audience with an ample amount of sex along with a side dish of revenge and betrayal. The latest edition of the franchise is no exception. Its two leading ladies, Ihana Dhillon and Urvashi Rautela make sure that the film doesn't lack in the oomph department. Hate Story IV starts on a melodramatic note which, as the story proceeds, is a flashback point. It’s about two rich spoilt conceited brothers, Aaryan (Vivan Bhatena) and Rajveer (Karan Wahi) who think that the entire world revolves around them and their money.   As Aryan and wife Rishma (Ihana Dhillon) look for a new face for their cosmetics line-up, it’s the lusty Rajveer who brings in Tasha (Urvashi Rautela), a stripper, who is waiting for her luck to shine bright like a star. The damsel in distress Tasha seeks younger broth

Movie Review - Pari: Not a Fairytale – by Suhel Johar

Image
Pari: Not a Fairytale Is A Decent Horror Film Pari: Not a Fairytale is a supernatural horror film directed by debutante Prosit Roy. We have not seen a really good Indian horror film since long and though Pari does not entirely fit the bracket it is quite close to it with its perfectly scary, sleek appeal. Pari as the title insists on warning you that it is not a fairy tale while announcing that it is a horror film at the same time. But there is more going on in Pari than it wishes to let on, initially. There is romance, emotional drama and even a female bonding saga all rolled into one. The makers were extremely careful so as to not let any plot details out before the release and hence went easy with their promotions. The film set in Kolkata, is about Rukhsana (Anushka Sharma) an orphaned woman whose mother, Rubina, was killed in the accident while Arnab’s   (Parambrata Chatterjee) father was in the driver’s seat, falls into his lap, literally. The story builds on the
