Movie Review - Anaarkali Of Aarah by Suhel Johar

Image
Anaarkali Of Aarah Is Bold And Beautiful.     Anaarkali of Aarah revolves around an erotic singer, Anaarkali, from a small town of Aarah in Bihar. Anaarkali struts around in her blingy lehengas and is very popular for her songs. She is the star performer of the troupe and is confident of her success. She and her orchestra perform at parties on songs which are replete with double meaning. Considered to be a local treasure, Anaarkali is nearly a celebrity thanks to her popular performances. However, her life takes a twist when during one such stage show, a drunk and politically-connected VC (Sanjay Mishra) gropes her, she decides to fight back instead of cower. Disgusted by his act, Anaarkali objects to being touched without her consent. She is definitely not one to take things lying down and she slaps him and walks off the stage. But the politician is too powerful to let this insult be forgotten, and he has the local police under his command. She even considers filing an

Movie Review - Phillauri by Suhel Johar

Image
Phillauri Is A Mixed Bag Of Emotions.     After a hard-hitting NH10 , producer Anushka Sharma is back with her second venture Phillauri . This time around she has chosen, Romance, the most explored genre in the Hindi film industry, as the subject for her film. And just like her first production, Phillauri also boasts of a unique storyline and an interesting star cast. In fact, Phillauri has not one but two love stories interlinked with each other and the narrative sways between the two stories. Both stories happen simultaneously as the film travels from 1919 to 2017. The first story is about Kanan (Suraj Sharma) and his childhood sweetheart Anu (Mehreen Pirzada). A young Mangalik boy, Kanan, is told he must marry a tree before he can wed his childhood sweetheart, as the ritual will protect him from all bad omen. Grudgingly, he agrees. This marriage between Kanan and the tree introduces us to the second story which is actually the man story of the film. This st

Kapil Sharma Forced To Call Off Shoot Of His Show by Suhel Johar

Kapil Sharma Forced To Call Off Shoot Of His Show.     It has been reported that besides his teammates having deserted him, celebrities too gave him a thumbs- down. Kapil could not manage to get any celebrity to shoot for his show on Wednesday and the shoot had to be called off. With no celebrities, no Sunil Grover/Chandan Prabhakar/Ali Asghar/Sugandha Mishra,   Kapil was left with no option but forcibly cancel the shoot of his popular tv show, The Kapil Sharma show on Wednesday. The last shoot happened on two days before with only Kiku Sharda and Rochelle who hardly matter in the scheme of things? Mind you, he has a commitment to honour. He had asked Sony (broadcaster) for a break to shoot for his upcoming film Firangi. Sony had permitted him to shut the lights for a certain period- but not before he handed over a decent number of complete episodes to them. But he now finds himself in a soup with hardly anybody around him. Ali Asghar (he has reportedly already si

Salman Beats Akshay, Hrithik To Head List Of Bollywood's Highest Advance Tax Payers by Suhel Johar

Salman Beats Akshay, Hrithik To Head List Of Bollywood's Highest Advance Tax Payers.   There is no denying the fact that Salman Khan rules Bollywood. The actor, who has been part of films that managed to set the cash registers ringing at the box office in 2016, proves his supremacy once again. Salman Khan has beaten his contemporaries, including Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan, to become the highest advance taxpayer for the financial year 2016-17. Salman Khan, whose blockbuster hit Sultan (2016) earned over Rs 500 crore worldwide, has paid tax of Rs 44.5 crore. Given that the amount he paid in the last fiscal year was Rs 32.2 crore, Khan's annual income, is estimated, to have grown over 39 per cent in the current year. Inching close to this figure with an amount of Rs 29 crore as advance tax is Akshay Kumar, who has had hits like Rustom and Jolly LLB 2 to his name in the past one year. Incidentally, Akshay paid an advance tax of Rs 29.5 crore in this fiscal,

Movie Review - Trapped by Suhel Johar

Image
Trapped is A Gripping Film That Holds Your Attention From First Frame To The Last.   Trapped is probably the first film since Delhi Belly (2011) to release in theatres without an interval. It is Vikramaditya Motwane's third feature film directorial venture. His first film Udaan won him a lot of acclaim as a director and the film was even selected to compete in the 'Un Certain Regard' category at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Trapped premiered at the 18th Mumbai Film Festival in 2016 and reportedly received a standing ovation from the audience. Trapped with Rajkummar Rao in the lead is based on an interesting subject about a man who is trapped in his own apartment. The wafer thin plot of the film goes like this.   Shaurya secretly admires his office colleague Noorie (Geetanjali Thapa). At first shy, Shaurya takes baby steps to try and woo his lady until he finally lands up on a dinner date with her. The duo strike a chord in no time and friendship start

Movie Review - Aa Gaya Hero by Suhel Johar

Image
Aa Gaya Hero Just Makes You Wonder ‘Kahan Gaya Hero’.   A small-scale movie with big hopes called Aa Gaya Hero, previously titled Abhinay Chakra ,   finally opened in cinemas after several changes to its release schedule. An out and out masala film on the lines of late 80s and early 90s potboiler cinema Aa Gaya Hero has been directed by Dipankar Senapati. The film is primarily for the interiors but the absence of a known leading lady or a chartbuster song hampers the box office prospects of the film further. Despite a concerted effort, Govinda struggled to find a distributor to release his film, which he has written and produced. The film was supposed to be a vehicle to help Govinda resurrect his non-existent career. But instead with Aa Gaya Hero , director Dipankar Senapati ensures that he ends up being a zero. The film definitely has Govinda’s stamp all over it but is the audience keen on watching outdated gags with no technical finesse? Can the ‘90s’ formula of succ

Movie Review- Machine by Suhel Johar

Image
Machine Is A Film That Lacks A Soul And Is A Very Mechanised Fare Machine , the launch vehicle for Mustafa Burmawala, son of Abbas of the film’s director duo Abbas Mustan, was perceived as the biggest of the three Hindi releases of this week. It was believed that Abbas-Mustan would put to work their ingenuity as far Bollywood thrillers go but they’ve completely failed in doing that in this film. Unarguably, it is the worst film coming out from the Abbas-Mustan stable. Few seconds into the film and we get treated to the lush greenery of North India where we see Sarah Thapar (Kiara Advani) indulging in some charity work at an orphanage. The next moment, the high-heeled lady is zooming past the roads off the valleys in her car only to get it skid over an oil spill. But for the saviour that she is, she prevents another car from meeting a similar fate. Turns out the man is an attractive man named Ransh (Mustafa Burmawala) who now only has eyes for Ms Thapar who has alre

Restaurant Review - Kabab Rolls, Al Barsha, Dubai by Suhel Johar

Image
Kabab Rolls   Revisited!   There was a time I used to go to this excellent Indo- Pak cuisine restaurant called Kabab Rolls in Al Barsha, Dubai, for lunch, every Thursday with my friend Yogesh Tolia. So it was really good to go there on yet another Thursday afternoon with Yogesh after about three years. Nothing much seemed to have changed about it. The decor/interiors were just the same and I even spotted a few familiar faces amongst the hotel staff. What made me fall for was their yummiest kababs. Excellent service. We were greeted very cordially and since it was a buffet lunch we had to serve ourselves with what was laid out on the table.   We started with mouth watering Chicken Yakhni soup. Once done with the soup I munched on the Lamb Seekh Kababs, yummy Afghani Chicken Tikkas and some   shallow fried fish. There were rotis and naans too on the table but we preferrer to order some fresh made to order crispy tandoori rotis to have it with Mutton Korma and C

This Actress’ Son Can’t Meet His Grandfather. Guess Who? by Suhel Johar

Image
Starting off as model while she was still a kid this actress has appeared in a number of films most of which were big flops at the box office. However, she was highly praised for her work in some of her films and went on to win a few awards for her performances. Her most successful commercial film was one that had her starring opposite one of the most Wanted stars of Bollywood. Married for a while now, she may have cut down on her film assignments but she is very active on social media and has been a supporter for the cause of Animal Rights. Some time back, this actress made it to page 3 for her drastic transformation with many touting it to be a case of plastic surgery gone wrong. The actress currently enjoys being a hands-on mom to her son and even though she might be missing from the silver screen, the actress is having no qualms about it. But according to some insider reports all is not well in her house. No, her marriage is not on the rocks. In fact, all seems t

Movie Review - Badrinath Ki Dulhania by Suhel Johar

Image
Badrinath Ki Dulhania is like a roller coaster ride of fun based on a very relevant theme.   Badrinath Ki Dulhania is the second instalment of a franchise that began with the romcom Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), which was also directed by Shashank Khaitan, produced by Karan Johar for Dharma Productions, and starred Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. Badrinath Bansal (Varun Dhawan) from Jhansi and Vaidehi Trivedi (Alia Bhatt) from Kota belong to small towns but have diametrically opposite opinions on everything. This leads to a clash of ideologies, despite both of them recognizing the goodness in each other. The film starts off as a simple small-town romance but it seems like the director understands the current tide of films that celebrate powerful and liberated woman, so he plays out to make pertinent points about the deathly dowry system, a woman’s natural right to follow a career after marriage and the prejudice against the birth of a girl child.
