Image
Varun Dhawan, who will soon be seen with Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez on the silver screen in father David Dhawan's Judwaa 2 , is all set to collaborate with filmmaker Shoojit Sircar for the first time in the film titled October . The two were spotted recently outside Shoojit's office with reports indicating that they met up to discuss their upcoming project. Varun kept it simple in a V-neck tee and light blue jeans which he paired with a black cap. Shoojit was clicked escorting Varun to his car and even posed for the shutterbugs before zooming off. If reports are to be believed then Varun Dhawan's forthcoming film October with Shoojit Sircar, is inspired by the Hollywood Oscar nominated film Her . The film that is centred around Varun's character revolves around an unusual love story which has never been seen before in Bollywood. Buzz is that much like the film Her , where a man falls in love with an interactive smart user interface voiced by a

Movie Review - Bhoomi by Suhel Johar

Image
Bhoomi Is A Repulsive Rape and Revenge Drama Sanjay Dutt’s much-awaited comeback film Bhoomi has finally released. The film is a 70s style "worn-out rape and revenge film", reeking of staleness. After Matr and Mom , Bhoomi is the third film featuring the gory tale of a young woman’s rape and the retribution sought out by her parent. Since the plot is not a new one we expected Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film to be an evocative flick showcasing the subtleties of a father-daughter relationship, the pains of a violated woman, or at least a new and novel take on revenge. Sadly, Bhoomi fails us on all these counts. The film’s story revolves around a father-daughter living in Agra. The spunky girl Bhoomi (Aditi Rao Hydari) has been raised by her father Arun (Sanjay Dutt), a widower. TV actor Sidhant Gupta plays Bhooli’s love interest. The father and daughter are exceptionally close and Arun’s friend (Shekhar Suman) also lavishes Bhoomi with filial love. Also in the nei

Movie Review - Newton by Suhel Johar

Image
Despite The Serious Issues Newton Deals With, It's A Fun Journey. Newton is India’s official entry in the Foreign Language Film category at the 2018 Oscars. Directed by Amit V Masurkar, Newton premiered at the 67th Berlin International Festival in the Forum Section wherein it won the CICAE Award for best film. Newton has already reportedly travelled more than 40 international film festivals all over the world and created quite a buzz. It surely can't be any easy job to take serious subject matters like election fraud and conflict between government troops and communist rebels, and then make a film out of it however that is exactly what the makers of Newton have set out to do here. Newton is a satire on the power dynamics that governs the lives of the tribal people inhabiting the Naxal-prone areas across India. Newton is essentially a one-day story of two men - a cynic and an eternal optimist - who must go about fulfilling their respective electoral duties accord

Movie Review - Haseena Parkar by Suhel Johar

Image
Based On A Wobbly Script Shraddha Kapoor Is Totally Miscast In And As Haseena Parkar.     Haseena Parkar , the biopic of Dawood Ibrahim's sister Haseena Parkar, finally released this week after getting pushed week after week since July this year. Directed by Apoorva Lakhia the film tells the tale of Haseena Parkar (Shraddha Kapoor), Dawood Ibrahim’s sister, who from a timid Konkani Muslim girl rose to became a feared lady don in Mumbai’s Nagpada area. It explores her relationship with her brother, husband and the world of crime. Haseena Parkar also aims showcase how the lady instilled the fear of her brother amongst the public and slowly built a clout of her own. And yes, it does not call Dawood by the name, it is just Bhai in this flick. The first half is relatively decent. We are introduced to the Kaskar family, where the two eldest sons, Dawood   (Siddhant Kapoor) and Shabbir have embarked into the world of crime. Their sister, Haseena loves them dearly and enjo

What’s Brewing Between Ranbir Kapoor and Mahira Khan? by Suhel Johar

Image
Ranbir Kapoor, who will soon wrap up Sanjay Dutt's biopic, flies down to Georgia to spend quality time with his supposed girlfriend. Ever since Ranbir Kapoor broke up with Katrina Kaif, the actor's personal life has been of more interest to his fans than his movies. While his name has been linked to many ladies, the latest rumour is that Ranbir is dating Pakistani actress Mahira Khan. Ranbir Kapoor, who is on the verge of wrapping up Sanjay Dutt's biopic, has flown down to Georgia. Speculations are rife that the actor has zoomed off to spend quality time with his ladylove. Since they both can't visit each other's country, they apparently prefer meeting in a different country. We wondered if the lady was Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, who is rumoured to be in a relationship with the actor since a few months now. However, it should be noted that the Raees actress had then refuted the dating report through an Instagram post. But since the last cou

Movie Review - Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi by Suhel Johar

Image
Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi Audience Ke Liye Sardardi   Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi which commenced shooting back in the year 2014, finally hit the screens after a long struggle. A rom-com based on inter-caste marriage, PKPS joins the list of many wedding movies that released this year, including, Badrinath Ki Dulhania , Running Shaadi , Baaraat Company , Bareilly Ki Barfi , Shubh Mangal Saavdhan , Toilet: Ek Prem Katha etc. While we may think inter-caste marriages may no more be an issue, veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal who are sharing screen space first time in 20 years after Damini show us the actual problems in a Gujju-Punju love-story. Indeed, inter-caste marriage is a great formula used successfully in many bollywood films with great results. However, when writer-director Sanjay Chhel attempts this idea with his comic caper Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi he ends up with a dud. The story of PKPS revolves around the Gujarati family of Paresh Rawal and the Punjabi f

Movie Review - Simran by Suhel Joihar

Simran ’s Flawed StoryAnd Weak Screenplay Run Outs Ranaut.   Kangana Ranaut’s Simran finally made it to the screens this week. Kangana has been in the news for a long time now but her recent interviews made headlines with a barrage of personal revelations keeping the spotlight firmly on her right ahead of Simran ’s release. In all fairness, raking up a controversy just ahead of a film’s release is now cliché and one must say Kangana has used this ploy to the optimum. But let's talk about Simran rather than Kangana. Directed by Hansal Mehta, Simran is the story of a 30 plus old middle-class woman Praful Patel (Kangana Ranaut), who is badass, confident, adventurous, ambitious and full of life. Divorced from her husband she resides in Atlanta (Georgia) along with her hyper critical parents (Kishori Shahane and Hiten Kumar). She works as a house keeper in a high end hotel for a living, though she always wanted to enjoy her life. Praful’s dream is to own a mall apartment

Play Review - Ladies Sangeet by Suhel Johar

Image
Ladies Sangeet Is A Hard-Hitting Story Filled With Compassion, Sympathy And Trauma.   It was after quite some time that I got to go to Prithvi Theatre at Juhu, Mumbai. It’s always been such a pleasure to be there and soak in its soothing atmosphere. So when I was invited to watch the Hindi-English play Ladies Sangeet play I just couldn’t refuse. And was I happy or disappointed? Well it was a pleasure to sit through Ladies Sangeet and watch the play. Set in an urban Indian household Ladies Sangeet began with marriage preparations in a haveli or an ancestral home. Since music is an integral part of an Indian wedding celebration, it forms the backdrop of playwright – director Purva Naresh’s Hindi-English play Ladies Sangeet . Just before the event, various conflicts that have wound its members up over the years unspool. The multi-layered play explores gender dynamics and has as its core the conflicting issues between contemporary and tradionality. It raises some hardcore

Movie Review - Lucknow Central by Suhel Johar

Image
Lucknow Central Disappoints With Its Flawed And Contrived Script. The theme of Lucknow Central has some similarity with Yash Raj Films’ Qaidi Band and follows more or less the pattern of younger generation film which was released three weeks ago.   Qaidi Band exposed the audience to the terrible life of jails. Similarly, Lucknow Central , also deals with life in the prison and what’s more, the crux in both the films is the prisoners forming a band in order to escape from jail. And that wouldn’t have been a grievance at all if the story of Lucknow Central didn’t have so many loopholes. Ironically, Lucknow Central is said to be inspired by a real life incident. There is actually a band formed by prison inmates in Lucknow that performs at functions. In 2007, the then senior superintendent of the jail, V K Jain, decided to set up a band from Lucknow to participate in the annual event where inmates from different central prisons across Uttar Pradesh came together to show
