Movie Review - Poster Boys by Suhel Johar

Poster Boys Is An Interesting And Entertaining Comic Caper

Poster Boys is the directorial debut of actor Shreyas Talpade who is also playing an important role in the film. It is the official remake of Shreyas’ 2014 successful production venture in Marathi Poshter Boyz. The film deals with the topic of vasectomy which is a very big issue in a country like India, where the population is ever-growing!

The story is set in a North Indian village which has a lot of disbelief, stereotype and traditional thinkers. The story is quite simple and revolves around Jagawar Chaudhry (Sunny Deol) a retired army officer, school teacher Vinay Sharma (Bobby Deol) and Arjun Singh (Shreyas Talpade) a recovery agent for a credit card company. The trio gets into a lot of social and mental trouble after mistakenly being featured in a vasectomy (nasbandi) poster made by health ministry. They are humiliated and ridiculed by the society, families, and friends. As the story progresses it shows the corrupt and never ending government officials excuses and how the three characters cope with the situations. The trio get together to find out how their pictures ended up on a vasectomy poster and how the trio get rid of their ‘Poster Boys’ image is the crux of the film. As time passes all three of them understand, how difficult it is to get justice in a corrupt world.

The plot of the film unfolds smoothly with the storyline that keeps the film interesting till the end. The concept of the film is simple and crisp with a good mixture of comedy. The film’s first half is hilarious and so is the film’s second half. Post interval the film gets a little preachy touching on social issues like Triple Talaq, Beti Bachao and some superstitious beliefs. But still there is seldom a dull moment in the film. All the time something or the other is happening in the film.

There are times when you actually have tears in your eyes laughing your guts out. The jokes are used well even though some of them are old and from the 80s. The comic timing of all the actors is in place and contributes to the fun quotient of the film. The film is loaded with funny punchlines. The whole idea behind the film is to entertain its audience through some good comedy – situational, farcical and even slapstick.

Shreyas Talpade in his directorial debut has done a good job and is in full control of the film right from the first reel till the last reel. He has been greatly helped by the film’s script writers, Bunty Rathore and Paritosh Painter. They successfully transform an ordinary story into an enjoyable screenplay with their apparent flair for comedy. Dialogues by Bunty Rathore and Paritosh Painter are in accordance to the mood of the film. Cinematography by Nigam Bomzan is okay while editing by Devendra Murdeshwar is good. Music by Tanishk Bagchi is listless.

Performancewise, Sunny Deol is in his elements and top scores with his comic timing. Bobby Deol and Shreyas Talpade are not far behind and impress you with their acts. The camaraderie between the three is remarkable. Apart from these three, Sonali Kulkarni, Samiksha Bhatnagar and Bharti Achrekar do justice to their roles. Ajit Singh Palawat is good. The rest of the cast provide adequate support.

On the whole, Poster Boys is a full-on-comedy comedy film that will make you come out of the theatre with a smile.
