Movie Review – Raid – by Suhel Johar

RAID  Impresses And Engages Only In Bits And Parts, Not A Compelling Watch Though! The biopic mania in Bollywood continues with Raid . Of late every other film is either based on a real life character or a true life dramatic event. Raid directed by Raj Kumar Gupta (who has earlier made films like Aamir , No One Killed Jessica , Ghanchakkar ) relies on his firm footing as a man of consequence to pitch itself as a tribute to the IT department's unsung heroes. The story of Raid , a period crime thriller, is inspired from a true event involving a brave and incorruptible Income Tax Officer Sharad Prasad Pandey who raided the house of a businessman Sardar Indra Singh in the year 1981 and seized cash and gold worth Rs 1.6 crore. This raid ran for 18 hours and 45 people in it were constantly sitting just to count the notes. Ajay Devgn plays Amay Patnaik, an income tax officer known for his integrity. He's a stickler for rules and is someone who has been transferred

Jackie Shroff's short film SHUNYATA wins cash prize of $1,000 at Best of India Short Film Festival in Los Angeles. The 22-minute fiction film directed by Chintan Sarda was selected to be in top six from amongst thousands of entries and was played at a theatre in Los Angeles for a ticketed event for a week. An industry based jury then adjudged it the best film. The prize includes a cash prize of $1,000. In Shunyata , Jackie is seen as hitman Madhur, who leads a gloomy existence with regrets. He is friendly with a child, who lives on the street and sees him getting into the world of crime. Jackie Shroff's tired body language and inherent street smartness makes him believable as the gangster with a conscience in the short film. One can believe that he is cold-blooded by practice, and that the warmth he had suppressed for so long surfaces only at the sight of the boy. Simultaneously, he looks irredeemable – an unforgivable product embodying the worst of India’s teemi

Trailer: Omerta

OMERTA   Looks At What It Means To Be A Fundamentalist. Director Hansal Mehta, who unveiled the gritty trailer of the film on Wednesday, says his idea behind making an “uncomfortable film” is to make the audience face the truth. The film, starring Rajkummar Rao, is based on British-Pakistani terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh. Omerta takes a look at this complex paradox of a man called Omar Saeed Sheikh. Mehta while launching the trailer confessed that it was a difficult subject to choose and a challenge to make. “However, with an actor like Rajkummar, no challenge seems insurmountable and this was the ideal film to hurtle us out of our comfort zone to make something that is uncomfortable. “But that is the burden of truth – it is uncomfortable and it must be faced.” According to Mehta, Omerta looks at what it means to be a fundamentalist and for someone to pick up a gun with the intent of killing in return for an afterlife in paradise.
