Ajay Devgn To Play Baba Ramdev In Biopic On The Quirky Yoga Guru? by Suhel Johar
There was a buzz that Ajay Devgn will be producing a
television show based on Baba Ramdev's life. However, it seems now that the
project has gone through a few changes. Devgn might be seen playing Ramdev in
the biopic after Vikrant snubbed his nose at the thought of going back to
television, Devgn, who was to produce the story, has taken it back to the
board.
Massey had been approached for the role and had
started prepping for it, too. He was scheduled to meet Ramdev and pick up his
mannerisms during the course of their interaction. However, the A Death in the
Gunj star backed out of the project as he was not too keen on doing television
after having ventured into films.
The numerous controversies surrounding the yoga
guru, his Patanjali business empire, and his turbulent tryst with politics
could lend a lot of colour to the biopic, if it is made. Devgn, who owns the
production company is keen on bringing the yogi's life to the forefront. Talks of
doing a biopic on Ramdev gained credence only after Ajay decided to step into
the role. Known to be colourful, quirky, and quite the scene-stealer in public
spaces, Ramdev has a huge success story to prop up his image. Devgn, too, seems
to be keen to explore this image of his.
With his purported epic on the Battle of Sargarhi showing no signs of progress yet, it’s full
throttle ahead with the Ramdev biopic for him.
Devgn is currently busy with the promotions of Milan
Luthria's Baadshaaho which also
stars Emraan Hashmi, Ileana D'Cruz,
Vidyut Jammwal and Esha Gupta.
Ajay Devgn, who was last seen in the underwhelming
self-directed home production, Shivaay,
will be also seen working on another biopic, next year. This one on the life of
the former Additional Chief Mining Engineer Jaswant Singh Gill. Ajay, will
collaborate with filmmaker Abhinav Shuklaa on this film and has roped in Tinu
Suresh Desai of Rustom fame to helm
the project. It may be recalled that Gill 1989, had saved the lives of 64 miners
at the Mahabir Colliery of Raniganj in West Bengal.
The makers have acquired the official rights to the
life story of JS Gill for the yet-untitled film. Work on the script has already
begun and Ajay will go through extensive prep before he starts shooting next
year.
Back in November 1989, around 220 miners were
breaking coal walls by triggering blasts, when the wall of an underground water
table adjacent to where they were working cracked and the water gushed in. Six
miners lost their lives and while the ones closest to the lift were pulled out,
64 miners remained trapped inside. A 2.5 metre tall steel capsule was created
and attached to a crane which was lowered into the pit. Gill, who was trained
in rescue procedures, volunteered to bring the miners back up and stayed down
till the last miner was pulled out to safety. After the six-hour, he was greeted
with applause for his valiant efforts.
Interestingly, there were even reports floating
around for quite some time about Akshay Kumar wanting to do a biopic on Gill as
well. But there never was any official statement about it coming from him.
