Movie Review - Behen Hogi Teri by Suhel Johar

Behen Hogi Teri Is An Inane Rom-Com That Fails To Impress

Behen Hogi Teri, the first on-screen outing of Rajkummar Rao and Shruti Haasan, doesn’t live up to the expectations. Since Rajkummar Rao took a break from his serious roles to do a light-hearted rom-com, Behen Hogi Teri was an anticipated film, but it failed to strike a chord. the film was scheduled for a worldwide release on May 26, 2017, but release was pushed ahead to June 9, 2017 due to some production issues.

As evident from the trailer, the film is set in Lucknow and tells the story of Gattu, who falls in love with his neighbour Binny. Now, since Gattu and Binny are neighbours, a romance between them is a far-sighted dream as they are ‘supposed’ to behave like siblings.  Despite being juvenile and casual in life, Gattu ends up winning over Binny and their love life bloosoms. Things turn upside down when Gattu's best friend Bhure drops Binny on his bike and Gattu's father see's it. He spreads rumours in the area saying Bhure and Binny are secretly having an affair. How Gattu and Binny fight against odds to get together forms the crux of the story.

The plot of Behen Hogi Teri is confusing and archaic.  In today's era where the relationship between boys and girls has changed, this film runs on the old norms.  Behen Hogi Teri tries hard to be a film that blends romance and fun, but fails to hold even one genre. The romance in the film seems superimposed. Since it is set in a small town, to show the concept of dating a song is used to tell viewers about the relationship status of the lead pair.

This film shows no effort to portray romance in a new light. Instead what you see is a beaten to death formula,  of a girl refusing a guy a billion times and then finally agreeing to him. The characters lack depth and everything seems to look limited.

Ajay Pannalal’s direction is below average and the 128 minutes movie is long and boring. There are a few twists in the film but the weak screenplay and a weaker storyline lets this opportunity go waste. Story by Vinit Vyas, screenplay by Vinit Vyas and Ajay Pannalal and dialogue by Vinit Vyas and Ajay Pannalal is unimpressive. Editing by Devendra Murdeshwar  is bad while cinematographer by Viraj Sinh Gohil is just about okay. Music by Rishi Rich,  JazzyB, Yash Narvekar and Amjad Nadeem is not bad.

The only thing worth watching in this film is Rajkummar Rao. It is the immense talent of this actor that sustains the film. Shruti Haasan looks beautiful but that's the only thing which is good. Her acting is below par and it seems like she herself is disinterested in the film. Gautam Gulati is spontaneous. Herry Tangri and Darshan Jariwala, do well. Ninad Kamat is good. Ranjeet and Gulshan Grover are good in their cameos.

On the whole, Behen Hogi Teri, has nothing going for it and can be easily avoided.
