Ajay Devgn To Remake Jigarthanda With Farhan Akhtar and Sanjay by Suhel Johar
Ajay Devgn has picked up the Hindi remake rights of
the 2014 Tamil film Jigarthanda. However he won’t be playing the lead in the
Hindi remake instead he has decided to cast Farhan Akhtar and Sanjay Dutt as
the main leads.
A quirky black comedy, directed by Karthik Subbaraj,
Jigarthanda had Siddharth, Bobby
Simha and Lakshmi Menon in the lead. The plot revolves around Karthik
(Siddharth), an assistant director who is thrown out of a reality new
filmmakers show, as his short film was disappointing. Heartbroken, Karthik has
the support of one of the judges who believes he has the stuff to be a great
director and is willing to back him if he does a script on a real life gangster.
Karthik travels to Madurai looking to make a film based on the life and times
of the notorious gangster Assault Sethu (Bobby Simha). The rest of the plot
deals with how Karthik makes his film with the help of a friend.
Farhan Akhtar would take on Siddharth's role while Sanjay
Dutt gets into Bobby Simhaa's shoes as he gets to play the ruthless gangster
with filmi ambitions.
Gangster roles have always been Sanjay Dutt’s forte,
having seen him excel in movies like Naam,
Vaastav, Kaante, Munnabhai series
etc. This is also a role that could redeem him after that disastrous comeback
attempt in Bhoomi, as Bobby Simhaa
has got a National Award for his performance in the Best Supporting Actor.
Interestingly, the film had also won another National Award in the Best Editing
category for the film’s editor Vivek Harshan.
Nishikant Kamat, who earlier remade Malayalam movie Drishyam for Ajay Devgn would be helming
the Hindi remake of Jigarthanda. Reportedly,
Nishkant is closely working on the film’s creatives with Farhan and Ajay. There
were several other characters in the original. Casting for the Hindi remake is
presently underway. While Ajay Devgn is not playing the lead in the remake,
there could be chance that he would do a cameo in the film. The film will most
likely go on the floors in the last week of October or early next month.
Most top actors have been co-producing films
starring themselves. Some have even produced films with smaller/newer actors - Aamir
Khan - Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, Peepli (Live), Dhobi Ghat and Delhi Belly).
Salnam Khan - Chillar Party and Hero and Ajay Devgn -Parched.
Similarly, an A-list actor producing films with his
contemporaries in lead roles is not something that has not happened before. Way
back in 2005 Shah Rukh Khan was the first one to do so when he had co-produced Kaal starring Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi
and John Abraham. Another Shah Rukh Khan co-production, the remake of Yash
Chopra directed Rajesh Khanna starrer Ittefaq,
is all set to release in the next few weeks. The new Ittefaq features Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha in lead
roles.
Recently, Salman Khan decided to come on board as
co-producer alongside Karan Johar for a film that will star Akshay Kumar.
Ajay Devgn now joins the club with the Hindi remake
of Jigarthanda which will star
Farhan Akhtar and Sanjay Dutt in the lead roles.
Apparently, Ajay is expanding his production house
and wants to produce more films. Since he can’t work in all of them, he will
cast whoever fits the bill. He is also backing a biopic on the life of Baba
Ramdev that will be made for the small screen.
