Movie Review - Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana by Suhel Johar
Laali
Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana Is A Futile Film.
Although the title of the film, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana, is quite interesting. The trailer of the film too promised lots of
fun but the same cannot be said about the film. Because the film is a big
letdown and makes you want to tear your hair in despair rather than get
entertained.
If you are an ardent fan of sob stories, then Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana is
for you! Director Manish Harishankar will take you on a free holiday to
snow-laden exotic locales at the cost of just a movie ticket price. A tale of
clichéd romances and sacrificing for true love, LKSMLD has everything that will bore you to death.
Lalitpur resident Laddoo (Vivaan Shah) is the son of
a cycle repair shop owner (Darshan Jariwala), who aspires to make it big in
life. In search of his fortune Laddoo decides to go to Vadodra at his father’s
insistence. He joins a food joint owned by his father’s friend (Sanjay Mishra)
as a steward. (Sanjay Mishra) is very happy with his talent. While working at the
food joint, Laddoo meets Laali (Akshara Haasan) who is a regular customer. The
two soon hit it off but Laddoo starts off on the wrong foot as he lies about
coming from a rich background. The truth is soon discovered by Laali and she
even forgives him. The two fall in love and find a new job together.
After meeting Laddoo’s family who are happy for the
couple, the duo take on a trip together. After coming back, Laali learns that
she is pregnant. While Laddoo wants the child to be aborted, Laali wants to
keep it. The duo part ways and Laddoo’s parents disown him and accept Laali as
their daughter. They find her a suitable match in Veer (Gurmeet Choudhary) who
is a royal prince.
Veer who had lost his parents and fiancé in an
accident is living a lonely life in his palace. His caretaker Suhasini Muley
and family pandit advice him to marry a pregnant girl for his betterment, as
per astrology. Veer meets Laali and falls in love with her. Things turn sour
when Veer learns about Laali and Laddoo’s past. Who will Laali choose in the
end is what the rest of LKSMLD is all about.
The story of the film is quite weak and the script
absolutely boring. Most of the times, it is the side characters and not Laali
and Laddoo who take this story further. Characters are ill sketched and their
detailing is so off key that the characters come off as mere caricatures. The
film is unintentionally hilarious and it is the kind of fun that makes you want
to walk out of the theatre. Laali is initially shown to be a smart independent
working woman, who cracks deals worth crores (with her red Macbook) is left
jobless in one day. Worst of all, she says ‘Ghar, gaadi, mobile aur mobile ka
bill bhi company ka hai.’ What company is she exactly working for?
Laddoo on the other hand is a loser who tells his
girlfriend Laali that it’s okay if her boss is feeling her up because it is a
‘Chhote level ka compromise’. One wonders why is she dating him? Who would fall
in love with such a messed up man?
If you think this is how a love story is supposed to
be, you wouldn’t want to have one. How Laali and Laddoo fall in love, their
commitment and ultimately the parents exchanging their kids is just plain
stupid. Basically, this film fails on all levels of writing. It’s like the
first draft of a film that never got improvised.
The film will remind you of Preity Zinta starrer Kya Kehna in the second half. In a
desperate attempt to save the script, the writer-director has included
unnecessary humour that will make your head spin. The film is a proper yawn
fest. 130-minute is so difficult to spend in the theatres. When a film doesn’t
have a plot or even fair performances, no one can save it from sinking. LKSMLD is like any other cliched love
triangle story and seems more like a holiday trip for the film’s team.
Manish Harishankar fails both as a writer as well as
the director by coming up with a film that defies sense and sensibilities. He
is like the captain of a sinking ship that is his own doing. The film’s music
by Vipin Patwa isn’t good either especially when every ten minutes a romantic
song comes. Editing by Steven H. Bernard is poor. The only good thing about the
film is its cinematography by Ravi Yadav.
Akshara and Vivaan deliver embarrassingly
over-the-top performances. Vivaan Shah’s act is extremely confusing in this
film just like how the film is while Akshara Haasan looks pretty and is
consistent in holding one expression throughout the film. Gurmeet Chowdhary as
always does a poor job. His TV style acting doesn’t work on the silver screen.
Sanjay Mishra plays the same odd character which he
routinely does now, and talents like Darshan Jariwala and Saurabh Shukla are
reduced to doing goofy slapstick comedy. Suhasini Muley and Kavitta Verma pass
muster while Ravi Kisen is seen in an immaterial cameo.
On the whole, Laali
Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana, will end up as a frontrunner in the worst
films of the year category.
